Jeep Cherokee (Liberty)
2001 September: Australia gets two levels of trim - the Cherokee `Sport' and the Cherokee `Limited Edition'. The diesel engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and part-time 4WD transfer case, the V6 petrol to a 4-speed automatic and full-time 4WD transfer case. Jeep Cherokee (Liberty) 2001...
2001 January: The 2002 model year Jeep Liberty, KJ --> this one a Liberty `Limited', as at [Detroit] and to go on sale later in 2001. The Liberty takes the place of the Jeep Cherokee, the latter introduced in 1984 being dropped during 2001. The big change is the adoption of independent front suspension - a common trend as SUVs soften up. This gives better ride on-road, but generally lesser four wheel drive ability than live axles. Anti lock brakes (ABS) and
electronic brake distribution (EBD) are available.
Side curtain airbags for front and rear passengers are an option and
all five seating positions have lap-sash seat belts.
Left: Jeep Liberty `Sports'. The 3.7 litre V6 petrol engine is related to the Grand Cherokee's 4.7 V8. The specifications of the new diesel engine look impressive, it having more torque than the V6, at lower revs. The Jeep Liberty is built at
the new Toledo North Assembly Plant. - 4wd.sofcom.com/Jeep/Jeep.html
