Detroit 2001
BMW X coupe (right) is a 4x4 concept sports car
based on the X5 platform, in an interesting reversal
of the usual progression from "car" to 4x4, and fitted with
a 3-litre 6-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine.
A higher powered version of the BMW X5 4x4, the
X5 HP,
is also at the show.
Honda shows an
Acura
RS-X concept sports coupe,
right.
It is said that the RS-X
"hints at the technology and styling direction of the new sports coupe
that will replace the [Honda] Integra."
A prototype Honda / Acura MAV sports utility vehicle
will be a size up on the Honda
CR-V and
challenge the Toyota RX300.
Acura will also have a revised 3.2 TL,
a high performance Type S producing 194kW.
The Honda X
is a concept fun car, front wheel drive.
Jeep
Liberty
will replace the Jeep Cherokee
which will be dropped in 2001.
Mazda
has a 4-door version of the
RX sports car,
"a step closer to an actual production model
than the RX-EVOLV unveiled in Tokyo [in 1999]."
Mercedes Benz completes the new
C-class
range, with the debut of the new station wagon (right).
Mitsubishi has the `ASX' concept
four wheel drive, an even more car-like, potential
member of the
Pajero
(Shogun) 4WD family.
Nissan have a
new Z sports car
said to be "near production ready
for a planned 2002 release.
