DaimlerChrysler Supports Operation Countdown with a Mercedes-Benz Bus

The Victoria Police have taken delivery of a new Mercedes-Benz OC 500LE Bus, provided by DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific. The $350,000 bus which has been turned into a $750,000 Mobile Multimedia Display Vehicle is part of Operation Countdown, a new initiative that offers an interactive way of educating the community about road safety issues.

During the Victoria Transport Associations’ Freight 2005 Exhibition in Melbourne, Ken Matthews, managing director of Commercial Vehicles at DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific, presented Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon and Assistant Commissioner (Traffic) Bob Hastings with the keys to the new Mercedes-Benz bus.

“DaimlerChrysler is constantly researching and developing new ways of increasing the safety of our vehicles. This Mobile Multimedia Display Vehicle will provide many people with an opportunity to learn ways to increase their own safety on the road.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer Victoria Police the means of communicating important messages about road safety to the Victorian community”, said Mr Matthews.

“It’s not every day that a company simply hands over the keys to a $350,000 bus, but that is exactly what Mercedes has done on this occasion. We are very grateful for their support”, said Shane Priest, Operation Countdown Chairman.

The Mercedes-Benz bus will provide Victoria Police with a mobile interactive display that has been equipped with four touch screens, two plasma televisions and an interactive tyre demonstration that will provide dozens of schools, fairs, exhibitions and community groups throughout Victoria an opportunity to learn more about road safety.
