Jeep Wrangler Cheapest Mid Sized 4WD to Run, Says NRMA Motoring and Services

The Jeep Wrangler has been recognised as having the lowest operating costs of medium sized four-wheel-drives in Australia, in the NRMA Motoring and Services Vehicle Operating Costs Survey 2005.

The Wrangler won its class as the most economical car to run in the medium four-wheel-drive segment after comparing the capital, fixed and running costs of 64 model variants in the segment.

In a coup for the brand, Jeep models occupied seven of the top 10 positions in the medium four-wheel-drive segment for cheapest vehicles to operate. Variants of the Jeep Wrangler model took out the first three positions with the Jeep Cherokee Sport 2.4-litre 4 cylinder coming in fifth and the Cherokee Sport 3.7-litre V6 coming in ninth out of the 64 vehicles in the segment.

The accolade for the Wrangler follows record popularity for the iconic vehicle this year. On a year-to-date basis, as at July Wrangler sales (937) have increased by 73 per cent compared to last year and based on the current sell rate, the Wrangler is poised to overtake the previous full year record of 1,458 sales, set in 1997 – the vehicle’s first full year on sale.

“The NRMA vehicle operating survey results prove that performance, off-road capability and good looks needn’t cost the earth,” said Gerry Jenkins, managing director, Chrysler Jeep Australia.

“For these Wrangler and Cherokee models, being recognised to have low operating costs for vehicles with such capability highlights just one of the benefits of owning a Jeep,” said Jenkins.

The annual NRMA running costs survey is one of Australia’s most comprehensive private vehicle operating cost guides for consumers.

In the survey NRMA looks at all factors that influence the cost of running vehicles, including fuel, insurance, registration, interest on finance and the hidden cost of depreciation.

While the NRMA figures relate to motoring in NSW, costs in other states and territories will be similar, the main differences being in statutory charges.

Costs are prepared for a private vehicle travelling the approximate National average distance of 15,000 kilometres per annum over five years using a sophisticated Motoring Costs Calculator developed by NRMA Motoring & Services.
