Volvo Trucks Remain Focussed on Safety at Brisbane’s 36th Truck and Machinery Show The Volvo Brand and Volvo Trucks have long been synonymous with innovations in active and passive safety: Volvo Truck Australia will be showcasing a number of vehicles in its range at the 36th Truck and Machinery show in Brisbane from May 12 to 15. Each vehicle will be equipped with the latest safety features and a large portion of the Volvo Trucks stand will be exclusively dedicated to safety and its implications. In general terms, Active Safety includes all the devices that help prevent an accident from taking place while Passive Safety comes into play once an accident has become inevitable. Modern and experienced operators all have a view on what constitutes a safe environment but in many cases it is important to have the opportunity to visualise the impact of potential critical events on vehicles, drivers and other road users. The vehicles on show will include some of Australia’s most powerful trucks, namely the new Volvo FH16, Volvo FH12, Volvo FM12 and Volvo FM9 series products dedicated to the heavy duty segment. Visitors to the show will have the opportunity to sample some of the benefits of Volvo’s philosophy on safety and modern driver support. Driver reaction and stress durability can be tested in simulators where the driver will be subjected to unexpected conditions such as animals straying onto the roadway or other stressful conditions. A roll over cab will also be operational. Visitors will be able to clearly relate to the vital importance of wearing a seat belt when a truck rolls over. A number of interactive displays will simply and clearly demonstrate concepts such as the effect of speed on stopping distance and the absolute need to wear a seatbelt at all times. Visitors will also be able to “go inside” a digital Volvo Crash Test Dummy to see the damage that an unrestrained crash can have on the human body. The new Volvo FH16 will be the centrepiece of the exhibit. The Volvo FH16 is the latest high horsepower offering to enter the Australian market. The vehicle on display is a 6x4 tractor configured with the Globetrotter XL cab with B-Double wheelbase and fuel capacity. The Volvo FH12 on display boasts the Volvo 12 litres 500 hp engine and is specified to enhance both safety and comfort. The truck features electronic braking system EBS, Volvo’s automatic shifting Geartronic transmission and driver’s airbag. The Volvo FM12 6x4 tipper highlights the popularity of the Volvo FM platform fitted with D12D 460hp engine. The Volvo day cab is typically roomy and quiet. Tipper controls are integrated into the dash panel. This configuration highlights the versatility of the Volvo FM that stretches from B-Double to single rigid truck. The Volvo FM9 6x6 is a truck that will go anywhere anytime. The heavy driveline includes the D9A 380 hp engine, VT2214 cable shift transmission, VT2504TB transfer case and RTH2610B hub reduction axles. This all wheel drive spec is shown with a 6 seat crew cab, crane and tray-top. It is a perfect off road service vehicle. For those interested in technology the exhibit features a cutaway of the 610 horsepower D16 engine as well as the compact I-Shift gearbox system.
