I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport, and while stuck in terrible traffic tonight it just died. No warning nothing, I sat in the middle of the expressway trying to get it to restart. I sat there maybe 5-10 minutes and then finally it started again. I wasn't moving very much due to all 4 lanes being blocked...(it took me over 1 hour and 45 minutes to go less than 2 miles) then after about another 15 minutes it died again. Did the same thing I sat there for a while and then it started again. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem. I am a single girl with a Jeep that isn't behaving :-) and just need some advice. Any you could give would be a great help. Thanks

Hi Heather,
I have a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee (2006) that has died twice while driving it on the highway at 55-60 mph! There has been no logical or mechanical explanation offered other than it is "too new to tell." When mine died, it DIED! No steering, no lights, NADDA! I have had numerous problems with it...severe leaking through the moon roof, hesitation of power when trying to accelerate, tires continually lose air and tire pressure light comes on, and now my latest, a very strange whirring noise comes from the back end - intermittently- when I go from park to drive. Maybe some Jeep guru will read this and have some answers for us...?

I have a Jeep Cherokee Sport 2000 Petrol. Whenever I turn left the steering tightens and becomes very stiff. Lower steering column has been checked and no faults found has anyone any idea what this might be?

My wife and i suffer bad lower back pain after a long trip. We believe it is caused by the "european style" seats in our 2005 GC Ltd.

Hi, my wifes jeep had an explosion and it turned out to be the intake manifold. The dealer replaced the fuel rail, injectors, camshaft and crankshaft timing sensors, MASS sensor, spark plugs and an idle motor??

The car now bucks when coming to a dead stop. It never did this before. The dealership (Westbury Jeep) claims they cannot find the problem; yet one of their mechanics went for a ride and admitted there is a problem.

The care has been in for approximately 6 weeks since Thanksgiving and they recalibrated the computers and claim there is nothing wrong. They are a bunch of lieing bastards.

So, why does my car now buck upon coming to a dead stop??

I have a 4 year old Cherokee Jeep. this vehicle, (and the previous model had problems with interior lights coming on/staying on etc.
The dealer always said that there was nothing wrong, so nothing got done about it.
I now have a problem of the interior lights staying on whilst in motion. Then when the vehicle is locked, it takes 10 minutes for them to go out.
A local auto electrician doesn't know what is wrong and suggests it needs to be taken to the main dealer to sort it out. (now there's a laugh).
Please can somebody shed light on the problem.(sorry for the pun)

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee and have had it for about a year and a half. I bought it from a used car lot, it has run fine until just recently. I had a major service done on it, all fluids flushed, and refilled, Tune up, oil change. Now after about 2 weeks, my car has started dieing on me. I was on the freeway on my way home a week ago it cut off on me in mid rush hour traffic with no warning. I got it back started and it kind of sputtered a little bit and drove pretty well until I got to the auto shop. I dropped it off to be checked out, a diagnostic was done on it the computer showed it to be the ignition coil, well that was replaced and the problem has gotten worse. I still have no car at this time. Can anyone shed some light on this issue so I can get my car back. Thanks

Hi I bought a 1997 jeep grand cherokee laredo about 9 months ago supposidly with no problems. Now I am experincing somthing i cannot figure out. It has a feature that locks all the doors at about 15 mph after you first start driving or open a door. now when this kicks in I loose all power for a couple of seconds after the doors lock, however it goes away if i push the gas peddl to the floor. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.Even if you can maybe tell me how to just disconnect this function. If you want u can email me personally at tnyhardon@yahoo.com thanks again.

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis about 2 years now. I've been having problems with it overheating when stuck in traffic and the air conditioning get hots when it's not moving. I took it the dealer and they have no idea what causes the problems. They ran some test and came up with nothing. But they admitted that there's problems. Anybody have any idea what might be wrong with it? So far I have changed the radiator, thermostat, clutch fan, condenser. Cooling systems get prossurize really quick, but no lost of water in cooling system.

To ALL:

Jeeps overheating in traffic? A/C not getting very cool while in traffice.

I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.0L

My Jeep runs @ about 210F...it has driven me NUTS since day one. In stop/go traffic, it may creep up to ~215F or so. I've replaced the Radiator, thermostat, and water pump, it still runs that temp. We bought it at 72,000 miles, and it has run that temp the whole time, with 153,000miles now....I guesss they just run hot like that?

A/C not getting cool...hopefully you just don't have it in the Recirculate mode. I was having the same issue--not getting very cool in stop/go traffic, and such...I even took it to my mechanic to check the freon level...one day "playing with it", I realized that if it is not in RECIRCULATE mode (the 1st selection on the "mode" knob), it is trying to cool outside air....in Texas, we run 95F to 103F summers, trying to cool that to 70F or colder is almost impossible.

I'm not an A/C tech, but if it is not the above issue, you may be low on freon. But before you spend $$ on it, look at the Condensor, locatd in front of the Radiator (behind the front grill), make sure it is clean. Clean it if not (do this while the vehicle is cool.

Jeep dying randomly...starting/not starting. [if everything is shutting down, lights, headlights, radio, etc....the below explanation does not apply].

A random problem such as this, is USUALLY the fuel pump. I just recently replaced mine. Driving down the highway at ~ 80mph, it just got REALLY weak...but the motor didn't die, once I slowed down, it seemed to run normal, if I tried to pass someone...no way Jose.

The next day, when the Jeep was cold (and the fuel pump), I almost couldn't get it to act up anymore for the mechanic. But after some stomping on the gas, and high speed, it finally got the fuel pump warm enough to start malfunctioning.

However, this was just a "guess", since even the Jeep dealer could not confirm the fuel pump was weak. We had driven from Dallas Texas to Austin Texas, and I didn't want to take a chance on not making it back home....I had them replace the fuel pump...PROBLEM SOLVED!

These fuel pumps are electronic...MANY MANY MANY mechanics believe that either fuel pumps work, or not (no in between). This is true for older cars, which have mechanical fuel pumps that run off the engine power, but it is NOT true for electric fuel pumps.

The fuel pump assembly cost me $325 bucks (discounted), this includes: the housing, fuel pump and pressure regulator, and fuel guage. It cost an additional 1 hour labor charge (totally worth the $75 to me).

If you're mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself, and replace JUST the pump, I think it is like a $75 part.

If any newer vehicle (1980+) starts "randomly dying" on you, chances are, it's a fuel pump....

I have personally experienced 3 electric fuel pumps that were intermittent. One, I had in my hand....put power on it, it squirted gas like crazy...I let it run for a minute....thinking...maybe is ISN'T the fuel pump....I removed the power, thought about it a minute, decided to go ahead and replace it...but I hooked up the power one last time.....this time, the pump just "buzzed".

Believe, me, electric fuel pumps can fail intermittently, read up on electric motors and how they're built if you don't believe me. You get weak spots in the windings....

Everything dying? All lights/radio/electronics?

I've never experienced this with the Jeep, however, my 1997 Chevy Truck, Z71 5.7L V8, if the battery cable came loose, EVERYTHING shut down...motor and all.

Every time I tell someone this, they do not believe me. I understand why....with every car I've ever owned (except that Chevy truck), once the vehicle started, you could remove the battery, and drive off (assuming your alternator is working).

If you're mechanically inclined, you might try this with your Jeep. At least you could rule out a "low tech" problem.

USE EXTREME caution doing this, batteries can produce anywhere from 600amps on up to 1200 amps, and if you short the positive to ground, it will not be pretty.

With the vehicle idling, remove the postive battery cable, see if the vehicle continues to run. If it does die, maybe there is simply an issue with the cable connection to the battery.

I doubt you'll be this lucky....

oh yeah, check your local Lemon Laws.

In Texas, if I remember correctly, if you take a vehicle back to the dealer 3 times or more for the SAME problem, by law they have to refund or replace it.

I'm sure this applies to newer cars under warranty.

Check out:

It covers more than just labor...believe me. You'll thank me for this!

I have a 98 jeep wrangler, sport. It was recently stolen and recovered with missing parts.
after I got it fixed and what looked like back to new, I've noticed that everytime I get my jeep washed or if it rains the carpet on the drivers side is soaked under my heavy duty matt. I can't figure out where the water is coming through. My machanic couldn't figure it out and now i'm going back to the dealer to make them fix the problem. It never did this before it was stolen and fixed by the dealer.
This jeep had that "whirling" noise (as did a previous post)the very first year I bought it new and no one could figure out what it was, not even the dealer. I tried the whole Lemon Law thing but everytime the inspector came out to listen to the annoying noise, of course it didn't happen. It was on going up until the dealer replaced the breaks on another matter. strange!

I have a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee- I took my jeep in for a tune up and oil change and the day after I got it back it started dying on me. All the lights/radio remain on and it starts instantly, but it continues to die regardless of speed. When I took it in they first said it was my fuel pump then my ignition coil, then my computer. At this point I had it transfered to a dealership and they were baffled. They couldn't get anything on the diagnostics and replaced the crankshaft sensor. I got it back and made it all the way home but later that day it died again and now it wont start. How do I fix this??

I brought it to a jeep dealership and they ran it through all the diagnostic tests and said everything checked out, but, it's way dangerous to drive. What do I do now? Whom do I contact?? I know if it happens again I could be in a very bad wreck. Can someone PLEASE help? THANX!!!
