Anzac Day 1999
Sunny weather
brought large crowds to the 1999 Anzac Day parade
in Melbourne and other cities and towns around Australia.
Anzac day
commemorates the landing of troops from the then young Australia,
with New Zealand, British and French troops, at Gallipoli (Turkey)
during the first world war.
This attack turned into a great military defeat and
if the day glorifies anything it is not war
but rather the human spirit in terrible situations.
1999 is also the centenary of Australian troops fighting under Australian
commanders, as part of the British Empire, in the Boer war.
Military vehicles,
many of the old ones supplied by members of
the Victorian Military Vehicles Corps (club),
this one Bevan Fenner's
Landy,
provide transport for those unable to make the hike.
Other military vehicles included a (ex-)
Royal
parade vehicle,
Willys Jeeps,
Ford Jeeps
& trucks,
Austin Champs,
Dodge 4x4's,
and
M151 (Mutt).
The delightfully named
Odd Bods UK Association for World War II.
In Melbourne the parade's route is down
Swanston Street and its continuation
St. Kilda Road to the Shrine of Remembrance, ...
... where things are made ready for
a short ceremony held at about 12.30.
Remembered today: World War I (just a few remain), World War II,
Malaya, Korea, Vietnam, United Nation peace-keeping and
other roles.
