Volvo V40

S40

2000 Aug --> The Volvo S40 sedan (right) and V40 station wagon (below) - the revised Phase II models. Standard features include ABS brakes, traction control, dual-stage airbags, inflatable curtain (IC - side head) airbag and whiplash protection (WHIPS).

Engine options are between 1.8 and 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated DOHC four cylinder motors, the low-pressure 121kW T, and the high-pressure 147kW T4 turbo-charged motor.

V40

The choice of gearbox is between a five speed automatic, and a five speed manual unit. Front suspension is by MacPherson struts, with a 18mm wider track than the previous model. The 1.8 gets 185/65x15 tyres, the S40, V40 2.0 and T 195/55x15 to 195/60x15 tyres, and the T4 205/50x16 tyres.

Volvo makes a point of its having "reduced reciprocating weight and lengthened the connecting rod to reduce piston to bore friction, lightened the valve train, and improved the combustion process" on its latest engines. "CVVT (continuously variable valve timing) is used on both the T and T4 turbocharged engines to vary the exhaust camshaft timing..."

Fuel consumption is claimed to be 9.3L/100km in city driving and 6.0L/100km on the highway (T manual), 9.4L/100km / 6.1L/100km (T automatic), 9.7L/100km city (T4 manual), 9.9L/100km city (T4 auto').
