Volkswagen Campers.
Four wheel drive 4x4
Volkswagen Vans (Caravelle, Kombi, Transporter,
Vanagon, 1986-1991) were made in Austria by Steyr Daimler Puch.
They were fitted with 2.1 litre motors, 14 inch
wheels (except for some rare factory 16 inch wheeled versions), factory skid
plates, factory diff locks front and rear, full-time 4WD via a viscous
coupling (designed by Porsche), differential between front and rear axles,
and factory snorkel air intakes at eyeball height.
Final drive ratios were 4.86, 5.43, and 6.13.
The factory Wesfalia camper option includes two double beds (pop
up roof), propane stove, propane powered refrigerator, drinking
water/faucet/sink, tables, storage.
The vehicle can dive through mud holes all day,
support a big dinner cookout, then become a 4 person hotel for the
night.
Production continues in South Africa as of this writing (1995).
