Unimog.
Two Furlong Mark at Caulfield.
Unimogs are often used in specialist roles - snow ploughs, military roles, or fertiliser spreading as here by Colin Squires. That really is fertiliser spreading, not muck spreadin', at least it was on this nice summer morning at Caulfield racecourse where 6 tons was being spread under sections of the new track surface. This particular truck has a hydrostatic drive on the first four of its eight gears for gentle starts on soft ground. The load is dispensed by a conveyor belt and rotating spreaders at the rear which are driven hydraulically from the engine.
With big tyres and coil springs the ride is just like a Range Rover, although sound levels are a little higher. With a full load on board the ride is even softer and a little ponderous.
Gearing is quite low, but the truck can
be wound up to 105kph.
Substantial 455/70 R24 (17.5/70R24) tyres are fitted to this 'mog
for flotation on soft ground.
Note the portal axles with hub-reduction gearing.
