2000 December: A Toyota MR2 Spyder dressed up in the new Sportivo dress up body kit - front spoiler, side skirts, rear skirt and rear wing.

The removable hard-top is another new accessory.

2000 October: The Toyota MR2 Spyder (convertible) went on sale in Australia at $44,990.

The new MR2 has a 1.8-litre variable valve timing engine which gives 103kW at 6400rpm & 170Nm at 4400rpm and is transversely mounted behind the seats. It drives through a 5-speed sequential manual gearbox, controlled through a gear lever or through buttons on the steering wheel; the clutch is automatic. Suspension is 4 x MacPherson struts. The steering is electro- hydraulic power assisted. The car weighs just 975kg.

Gadgets include an in-dash 6-CD CD-player. The soft-top is raised and lowered by hand, and features a glass rear window. It is possible to raise or lower the soft top in less than a minute. Safety features include twin airbags and ABS brakes.
