The 1998 Suzuki Jimny updates and replaces a long running staple for the marque.
The Jimny will initially be available only as a hard-top, with the 1.3L 4-cylinder engine and either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions. There are two levels of trim - JX and JLX. Standard features include air conditioning (even on the JX) and the JLX comes with power steering, electric windows, central locking and roof-rails.
The Jimny is one for the economically minded (au$17K to $20K as of '98/'99), true-believer in four wheel drive. It has all the serious 4WD features: live axles with coil-springs, fore and aft, a real chassis, and a real tranfer case with high and low ratio gears. It is compact, which can give a choppy ride on undulating road surfaces, even in the city, but this is great for manoeuvrability.
Right: Andrew Flanagan sends this shot of the open Jimny, due in Australia, late 1999.
