Subaru Impreza 22B-STi
A limited edition
Impreza WRX coupe,
the Subaru Impreza Sports Coupe 22B-STi
[rolls off the tongue],
has been produced in Japan by Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) and
Subaru Tecnica International (STi).
Based on the successful Impreza World Rally Car (WRC),
only 400 22B-STi's were produced,
those on sale in Japan being snapped up in 24 hours.
Subaru Australia hopes that five
might come down-under where
they would be motor-sport collectors' items only
because they are made to Japanese specifications
and cannot be registered for road use here.
Special features of the Impreza 22B-STi include
an adjustable rear spoiler,
17" gold alloy wheels, and
a 2.2 litre DOHC turbo-charged engine.
The engine delivers 206kW at 6000rpm and
360Nm of torque at 3200rpm.
The close-ratio gearbox and centre diff' with adjustable torque-split
show it is hot stuff.
The first Subaru Impreza was revealed in November 1992, in Japan,
as a car with a definite motor-sport orientation
towards the World Rally Car (WRC) circuit,
up against the likes of Ford Escort, Mitsubishi Lancer and Toyota Celica.
Imprezas went on sale in Australia in March 1993
and the hotter WRX version in March 1994.
WRC success came in 1995 when Imprezas
won both the Driver's and Manufacturer's championships.
The Manufacturer's championship was again won in 1996 and 1997.
