Subaru Impreza AWD

Possums car

2001 March: Impreza World Rally Car at the show: 6-speed 4x4, 224kW at 5500rpm, 471Nm at 4000rpm.

2000 October: The 2001 model year Subaru Impreza comes to Australia, both the WRX (right) and the hatch (below).

The sedan's body is a little roomier, bigger (40mm wider) - and heavier. Standard features on all Imprezas include cruise control, ABS brakes, dual front airbags, remote central locking, height adjustable driver's seat, and CD player.

The styling is said to have been partly driven by the need to make the Impreza visually distinct from the Mitsubishi Lancer! The new front lights certainly change the look and the standard front and rear fog lights will, unfortunately, give some owners the opportunity to annoy other road users by using them inappropriately.

The 2001 Impreza range consists of the GX, RX and WRX, all in sedan and hatch body styles. The RX gets a Momo steering wheel, air conditioning and 15" 7-spoke alloy wheels, over and above the GX. The WRX gets lighter aluminium components - bonnet, lower suspension arms (sedan) & pedals - a rear spoiler, 6-stack CD player, improved brakes, and 17" wheels.

2000 August: New Impreza WRX released in Japan, and in Australia ~October. The new look has caused some slight controversy, apparently the rounded headlights (eyes) and down-turned grille (sour puss) not being the everyone's liking. Flared mudguards cover 17" wheels and MacPherson strut suspension is retained.

Plenty of go however - WRX (.jp) engine: 2-litre, flat 4-cyl', turbo-charged and intercooled, 4-valves/cyl', 184kW at 6000rpm, 333Nm at 3600rpm although, given the right bits, the makers can pretty much dial up whatever power they want, up to the 200kW+ of the STi's.
