Steyr 680 M3

Fritz Szoncso's Steyr 680 M3, a 6x6 version of the Steyr army truck.

  • truck, 2 seats, 2 doors
  • loa: 6730mm, width: 2400mm, height: 2630mm (cab)
  • wheelbase: 2760mm + 1200mm, track: 1810mm/1720mm, grnd clearance: 300mm
  • approach: 28°, departure: 32°
  • turning radius: 7300mm
  • weight: 6500kg (unladen), GVM: 12000kg
  • Steyr, diesel, 6-cyls, supercharged, 2-valves/cyl, ohv
  • power: 165hp at 2800rpm
  • transmission: 5m, part-time 6x6, two-speed transfer case
  • suspension: live-leaf/live-leaf, brakes: drums
  • tyres: 9.00x20, fuel-tank: 180L

The 4x4 680 with 2 axles (non supercharged, 6-liter, inline 6 engine, 120HP) also came with extended cab version, that gives extra 3 seats. They have the spare wheel under the frame, instead the tilt-frame behind the cab. I think all of them are used in the Austrian Army's driving school (I did my licence with one of them). These have a second (right hand) steering wheel, connected by a chain to the original (left hand) wheel. The 3-axle turbocharged M3 is usually fitted with a winch, driven directly from the gearbox. The rope usually goes out in the front but can be taken out to the rear by using the frame mounted guide pulleys.
