Canning Stock Route Western Australia.
The Canning Stock Route
was surveyed for the purpose of droving cattle from the Kimberley region of
Western Australia south to the goldfields.
Wells were constructed one day's travel apart for a mob of cattle.
The wells were timbered and provided with A-frames to lift water to troughs.
They have fallen into disrepair although some may have been restored.
The route is one of the classic four wheel drive adventures -
and one that must not to be taken lightly.
Navigation is hard, there are sand dunes and other difficult terrain,
and it is very, very remote.
The entire "track" is too long for most vehicles to
carry all of their own fuel so it is common practice to arrange
for a fuel drop to be from Newman.
David Isaacs kindly faxed in these GPS coordinates
(but take care - I typde them ni).

Travellers in outback regions must be well prepared,
travel in company, carry adequate supplies of fuel and water,
take good maps and leave a plan with a trusted individual
who can raise the alarm if overdue.
Vehicle fire due to overheating and the build-up of spinifex
under a 4WD is a serious hazard. 1996 -->
- 17 March 2000:
Kaye and Graeme Hogben
[report]
(right) on a wet trip up the Stock Route in 1999 and remind us that
2000 has also started soggily.
- Check ahead, and be prepared with enough
food and fuel etc. with a good "plan B"!
- 13 July 1999:
AN4WDRN
reports that the Canning Stock Route is open from end to end
after prolonged closure of various sections.
- Wiluna Police 08-9981-7024 and Shire 08-9981-7010;
Halls Creek Police 08-9168-6000
- Cunyu station 08-9981-2934
- Granite Peak station 08-9981-2983
- Glenayle station 08-9981-2983
- Capricorn Roadhouse 08-9175-1535
- Granite Peak and Glen Ayle Stations
have set a $20/vehicle track-maintenance fee.
It's reasonable when you consider the wear and tear on station tracks,
and it is negligible compared with your fuel bill.
- 28 March 1999: the ANFWDC made a press release
concerning the Canning Stock Route and access tracks:
- During periods that the south end of the CSR is impassable,
alternative routes may be available between well 9 and Wiluna
via Glen Ayle Station, or between well 5 and Wiluna
via Granite Peak station.
[...] these alternative routes are subject to closure
during wet weather [...]
Enquire at Wiluna before setting out to go north.
If travelling south, weather and road condition reports
should be sought via HF radio.
Members can check with the Australian National 4WD Radio Network
[VKS737].
[...]Granite Peak and Glen Ayle charge a $20 track maintenace
fee per vehicle.
Do not press on in wet conditions [...] retrace steps
or wait and notify officials of your position [... and]
be prepared for extended delays. [...]
Tracks across both stations are subject to closure during wet weather.
When using these tracks four wheel drivers should remember that
they are accessible at the [kind] discretion of the landholder and
some simple rules should be followed:
- Drive carefully and slow down when approaching cattle and other stock.
- Avoid driving in existing wheel ruts, to minimise track wear.
- Do not litter the track or watercourses.
- Do not camp or light fires on the property.
- Dogs and firearms are not permitted on station property.
- Access is at your own liability and risk.
