Echuca Moama
Echuca is best known for the historic port on the Murray River, once one of the busiest ports in Australia. Echuca has other attractions, including some good restaurants (and the National Holden Museum). Moama, on the New South Wales side of the river,
was bank rolled by poker machines in "the clubs" -
RSL, golf, sports etc. - until Victoria legalised the devices.
The clubs remain and still serve good food cheaply,
to get the remaining punters in.
Paddle steamers used to carry freight to the rail head.

but is actually of fairly recent construction.
The Barmah Forest and Lakes are upstream of Echuca. In their natural state the forests flood in spring - essential conditions for the red gums, other flora, and fauna. Dams and farm irrigation greatly reduced this annual flooding but "environmental flows" are doing something to restore the situation. Bush camping is allowed at sites in the park and there are some tracks (and good fishing). Go to the
