Gammon Ranges and Arkaroola, South Australia.

Photo taken in the Gammon Ranges South Australia.
Brian Price's 1975
series 3
Land Rover has been refurbished and overhauled mechanically
after 330,000 kilometres. It spent it's first 12 years in the Pilbara of
WA
before going to live in Bunbury. Brian bought it 5 years ago in Perth
from the third owner. It is absolutely original the only addition being
a Fairey Overdrive. Uses it for runs with the Rover Car Club and the

The Gammon Ranges National Park is located some 600 kilometres
north of Adelaide and is
bordered by Lake Frome to the east and the world famous Arkaroola Sanctuary to
its immediate north. The park is 128,000 hectares in
area and is famous for its rugged ranges,
deep gorges, water holes and magnificent sunsets
reflecting off the rich red mountains.
From Copley on the Leigh Creek road it is 128 kilometres on
a good unsealed road to
Arkaroola through Italowie Gorge, Balcanoona and intersecting
with the start of the Strzelecki
Track. The road runs through many picturesque creeks several of which
have water in them
depending upon the time of year.
Many side tracks lead off the main road to station homesteads
and to the northern end of the
Arkaroola Sanctuary. Many of these are four wheel drive only.
Arkaroola itself contains over 100 kilometres of four wheel
drive tracks in the 600 square
kilometre wildlife sanctuary and
among the attractions are places such as Barrarrana Gorge,
Nooldoonoolda and Bollana water holes
as well as Parralana hot springs. The world famous
Ridgetop Tour is available year round utilising the sanctuary's own Toyota
75-series
vehicles.
Fuel, mechanical repairs, tires etc. are available
as well as accommodation, camping and
meals in licensed premises at Arkaroola.
100 kilometres closer to Adelaide,
the Flinders Ranges area takes in a number of national
parks including the well known Wipena Pound with its
newly completed resort. Blinman the
oldest historic mining town in South Australia is also worth a visit and
is the location of the
annual National LandRover Jamboree held in May.
The Gammons and Arkaroola are
home to the Adnjamathanha people and the entire area is a
magnificent four wheel drive destination. Best times to visit
the Flinders and the Gammons
are spring or autumn. Your vehicle must be in top mechanical
condition, particularly tires. A
UHF set is very handy, HF flying doctor radio equipment is not
necessary.
