South Australia Desert Parks.

The northern parts of South Australia hold several desert parks. Late autumn, winter and early spring are the best times to visit. A Desert Parks Pass allows bush camping in:

  • Witjira National Park,
  • Simpson Desert Conservation Park,
  • Simpson Desert Regional Reserve
  • Innaminka Regional Reserve
  • Lake Eyre National Park.

A Desert Parks Pass is not required for, but lets you camp for free in the following:

  • Gammon Ranges National Park (esc' Arkaroola Holiday Village)
  • Flinders Ranges National Park (exc' Wilpena Caravan Park).

A pass is not needed for travel on public highways.

Desert Parks Passes can be bought from:

  • Dept. Env. and Nat. Resources, 77 Grenfell St., Adelaide
  • Far North District Office (see below)
  • RAASA, RACV, NRMA
  • various other organizations.

Only well prepared travellers should venture into harsh, remote regions such as the Simpson Desert.
