Kings Canyon

There is a bitumen road into Kings Canyon, running north from the Uluru (Ayers Rock) - Stuart Highway road. (Alternative dirt roads may be smooth if recently graded, or corrugated if not.) The Kings Creek cattle station, half an hour or so short of the Canyon is a good place to stay - a swimming pool, and very friendly people who will draw you into the life of the station if there is anything on. There is also a resort closer to the Canyon. Petrol is likely to be 30% more expensive than in major cities.

Start your walk as early as possible (dawn), and carry a couple of litres of water per person, even in winter, because the climbs and the sun beating on the rock can easily bring on dehydration. Besides, the light is best in the early morning.
