John Rowlandson's
GU Patrol
series-II (3-litre direct injection turbo-diesel)
at Stockton Beach, 2000
Stockton NSW, just north of Newcastle. We had been out to visit the wreck of the Sygna, a bulk carrier that ran aground and broke up on Stockton Beach. This stretch of sand is the biggest in the southern hemisphere. Close to Williamtown NSW RAAF base, it was once a bombing and target practice range. This beach is about 19 miles long and links Newcastle with Port Stephens. It is legal for recreational vehicles with a permit. Permits are available from the Anna Bay Ampol Service station, day pass $10-00, yearly $25-00. - Glenn Phelps [6/1999].
[...] Actually the front half of the ship was refloated
and taken to be scrapped in Asia.
[...] This stretch of sand is the biggest
continuous coastal sand dune in the southern hemisphere.
Williamtown NSW RAAF base, was once a bombing and target practice range.
One more piece of trivia:
Stockton Beach sand is regularly exported to Hawaii
and is used on Waikiki Beach.
