The Nissan Patrol GU, Nissan's replacement for the ten year old GQ Patrol, was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, September 1997, and brought to Australia for the Sydney Motor Show, October 1997. It went on sale in Australia in December 1997.
The base model 2.8L turbo-diesel `DX' starts at $39,950 (Aus),
much the same as the base Jeep Cherokee,
Land Rover Discovery, Toyota Prado, etc.
which gives you a lot of Nissan motor car for your
money. The top `TI', with 4.5 petrol, 4-speed auto (only)
costs $64,790.

Initial engine options are a 2.8L turbo diesel engine and an enlarged 4.5L 6-cylinder petrol engine (right). The 4.2 litre naturally-aspirated diesel, much loved by long-distance travellers, will be available later, in 1998. |

The new Patrol has live axles, coil suspension, ladder chassis and part-time four wheel drive as in the previous model. The ST gets a rear limited-slip differential and the TI a rear differential lock. ![]() |

External changes make the new 4WD wider and more rounded following the current fashion. There are safety improvements to the Patrol - ABS and air-bags - which is an area in which the previous car was showing its age. |

The TI (above) has leather and wood-grain trim.
Rear-seat passengers will really appreciate the leg room.
There is a third row of (small) folding, forward-facing seats in the back. |
