New Mitsubishi Pajero
1999, September 2: Mitsubishi revealed the redesigned Mitsubishi Pajero four wheel drive in Tokyo. The new car features moncoque construction, reckoned to save about 100kg in weight compared to separate ladder-chassis construction, although the new car is generally bigger rather than lighter than the previous model. The overall height has been reduced by 50mm (2"). Width is up by 100mm (4") to 1875mm increasing room in the rear-seats in particular. In Japan, the Pajero is powered by the 3.5 litre V6 dohc petrol engine with direct injection or by a new 3.2 litre direct injection diesel. Mitsubishi's Super Select 4WD system has been refined with automatic torque distribution. Four and five speed automatic gearboxes are available in Japan. In another radical move, "All-round independent suspension is by double wishbone with coil springs at the front and by a multi-link [-wishbone] arrangement at the rear." All these developments could pit it against the likes of the ML 320! On the safety front, air-bags are standard for driver and front passenger and ABS brakes are fitted. Pajero LWB (jp)
