Landrover XD130 MOD Field Ambulance.
In 1996 Marshall Specialist Vehicles was awarded a contract to supply between 600 and 1100 (probably 700) MOD field ambulances to the British Army. The winning vehicle is based on the XD130 a 130" wheel-base eXtra Duty or uprated Land Rover Defender. The competition for the contract was stiff with
Steyr Daimler Puch
nearly winning the day. This would have been a cruel
blow to British industry as the army had already bought
Steyr's Pinzgauers as replacements for its aged Land Rover
101" forward control
four wheel drive trucks.
Questions were asked in Parliament!
There is little doubt that the Pinzgauer is more capable off road,
and it is reported to be very reliable,
but it was deemed to be neither worth the extra 35% cost, nor politic.
