Mercedes Sprinter Van

1999: Mercedes Benz Australia has started selling a four wheel drive version of its Sprinter van. This is a light duty 4WD, but very roomy, and it seems likely to become popular with builders of 4WD-campers.

The four wheel drive Sprinter 312 is a factory model - there have been previous 4WD conversions by specialist companies.

Rivals: Iveco van, VW Transporter (Syncro).

Incidentally, the Mercedes Benz numbering system for commercial vehicles is apparently quite systematic and simple: the first digit indicates the (approximate) GVM in tonnes, and the next two digits the power divided by 10, hence 312 = 3 tonnes and 120hp. (Passenger car designations are altogether more mysterious.)
