2000: The Mercedes-Benz M-class has undergone various improvements - all three rear seats now have lap-sash seat belts, as is the modern trend, consequently the rear seat backs have been simplified to (just) a 60:40 split. Side air-bags for the rear seats are an option. The leather trim on the luxury option pack now includes door-trim and door handles, and has been generally improved in response to European (particularly) criticism.
2000, February: Mercedes Benz (au) released the ML270 CDI with a 2688cc 5-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine (120kW, 400Nm). Fuel consumption of 9.3L per 100km (NEDC) and a top-speed of 185km/h are claimed. The ML270 shares the standard features of the 6-cylinder petrol ML320.
