Mazda Le Mans 1991
1991
Mazda 787B, pictured with the
RX-8 sports car,
won the Le Mans
24-hour race in 1991.
It was driven by Bertrand Gachot, Johnny Herbert and Volker Weidler
and completed over 4900km at an average speed of 205km/h.
The Mazda 787B is the only car powered by a Wankel rotary engine
to have won the classic race.
Mazda is also the only car maker to have persisted with
the use of rotary engines in a production car - the
RX
series.
The Le Mans race car is on display at the Mazda museum at
the company's headquarters in Hiroshima, Japan
[-6/'01].
