The 80"-inch station wagon was Land Rover's first attempt at adding a little bit of luxury to a four wheel drive - visions of Range Rover perhaps?
The station wagon was based on the standard 80" chassis and running gear but the rear bodywork had a panel-beaten aluminium skin over a wooden framework.

Note the one-piece windscreen (and remember it for trivial pursuits). The door windows slide up and down! |
Needless to say Land-Rover's 80" station wagon was expensive and short lived so it is definitely a collectors' item today.
Land Rover later had a second attempt with the 86" station wagon which used a slightly modified standard hard-top body and was more practical. A number of 80" wagons did come to Australia including two that were used on the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
