Jeep Varsity
2000:
The Jeep Varsity
is a concept four wheel drive, i.e. based on
experimental ideas and to guage public opinion.
It is in the Grand Cherokee size range except
that it is 15 inches shorter, with a chunky look
and it must be cosy in the back.
Could its independent suspension, front and back,
really indicate a trend for production Jeeps in the near future?
Jeep would be following partners Mercedes (M-class) and Mitsubishi (Pajero)
if so.
The Varsity has a 3.5 litre V6 engine
(224kW 300hp, 345Nm 255 lb-ft)
although other engines could be dropped in without trouble.
The V6 drives a 4-speed automatic gearbox.
The transfer case has a choice of
rear-wheel drive, full-time four-wheel drive, and
four-wheel drive low-range.
P235/55R tyres were fitted on 19" (!) wheels,
indicating a strong road, rather than track, orientation.
