Cherokee, 4.0l engine, auto', AC, PS, PB, PW, cruise, tilt.
6,000 lb hidden winch, home-made 2" lift, 30x9.5x15 AT's,
Dana 30 front stock w/3:55 gears,
Dana 35 rear stock w/3:55 gears,
140,000 miles and still strong runner.
The engine is one of the most durable on the market today as it has 7
main bearing supporting the crankshaft.
The only drawback is the cooling system that tends to overheat when
using the vehicle. This can be cured though by adding an electric fan to
the radiator and "locking" up the existing fan.
By being uni-body construction [monocoque],
there is no frame [chassis] flex so it is a solid platform.
The automatic transmission is more than sufficent as is the
NewProcess transfer case. Both shift and perform great.
About the only unsatisfactory part is the exhaust system. It is
restrictive and hinders overall performance and fuel mileage. By
eliminating the muffler and running the exhaust through the catylic
converter only, you can enhance performance and not suffer hearing
loss.
Parts are readily available and not too expensive. Lockers for the
rear-ends are available in a variety of configurations and they should be
looked at carefully for your particular use before installation as they
all have their little nuances.
I have experienced only one rattle: The exhaust system. One of the
exhaust suspension points is at the transfer case and is a source of
rattle. By "notching" the underside brace
on the bracket where it makes contact with the crossmember,
contact can be eliminated.
