2000 October: The Hyundai Elantra (right) replaces the Lantra. What's in an `e'? Is it the influence of the electronic internet or just a bit of elan?

In any case, The Elantra comes as a four door sedan or as a five door hatchback. The GL sedan is priced from 19,990 with the 1.8L engine and manual transmission, and from 21,990 for the GLS sedan and hatch which have a 2 litre engine. Automatic transmission adds 1990. ( 10/2000)

All five seating positions have lap-sash seat belts. A safety pack of front passenger airbag and ABS brakes adds 1490 to the hatch, 1590 to sedans because the latter's rear drum brakes are replaced by discs.

The GLS models get 195/60 tyres on alloy wheels, front fog lights, rear power windows, remote central locking, and a higher level of trim.
