Honda HR-V 4WD
2000, Feb:
Honda brings a 4-door HR-V with a 100mm longer wheelbase
than the 3-door model to the Brisbane Motor Show.
1999: The Honda HR-V is a small four wheel drive, expanding Honda's range below the CR-V. HR-V has a 1.6 litre engine and a 2-box, 3-door form although a 5-door is planned. A novel option is a continuously variable transmission (CVT)
as an alternative to the manual gearbox.
Automobile CVT's were pioneered by DAF in the 1970s and
most use variable diameter
pulleys and belts to give continuously variable ratios.
At least one CVT car raced in formula three.
CVT allows the engine to operate at optimum r
and promise greater efficiency.
The trick has been to make CVT's durable enough and able to handle
more power, two litre engines being about the practical limit as yet.
The Honda unit uses steel bands as the flexible belt.
Depressing the accelerator causes the engine revs to rise
to the r that delivers the required
power,
and to stay there while the gear ratio changes smoothly
as the car catches up.
