General Motors

General Motors is variously General Motors Holden (AU), Opel (DE) and Vauxhall (UK). The General's four wheel drives are handled by Isuzu-G.M., a joint venture of Isuzu and General Motors.

The Jackaroo (Australia) is also sold as the Vauxhall Monterey (UK) and is a badge engineered Isuzu Trooper. The GM Frontera range is the junior partner but only the SWB Sport is imported into Australia.

2000 December: GM announced that its Oldsmobile Division would be phased out over the next few years. Oldsmobile was founded in 1897. An unsuccessful move into luxury cars lead to the company's sale to William Durant's into what became General Motors - Olds, Oakland, Buick, Cadillac. Oldsmobile was selling 1M+ cars per year in the 1980s, down to 300K in 2000.

2000 March: GM to swap 5.1% of its stock for 20% of Fiat Auto.
