Airfield Fire-Tenders
Airfield fire-tenders are generally all wheel drive vehicles
so that they can reach a crash site off the runway
or even outside the airfield perimeter.
A Gloster Saro 6x6 -
definitely big wheels (14.00R20).
Chubb Fire tender 4x4 (12.00R20)
carries 1800 litres (400 gallons) of water.
It is built on a
Reynolds Boughton
chassis, fitted with a rear-mounted,
Rolls Royce engine (235hp) and automatic transmission.
A light, quick-response unit: the
Carmichael
6x6 (was 6x4) Range Rover.

The Nubian Major below was built originally
to a spec' laid down by the forerunner to the UK CAA the Ministry
of Aviation, by
Carmichael
of Worcester UK for Manchester Airport UK on a 1971 Scammell chassis.
The body is believed to be a bit older [than the chassis] but is the
original & un-rebuilt. It has a 5-man cab with a monitor on cab roof &
2 on sides. It carries 1500 gal of water & 200gal of foam.
Powered by a Cummins 903 V8 14.7 litre engine
(or 903 cu inch) through a semi-auto g/box with selectable
all wheel drive, usually 2 rear wheel selected.
It came to Carlisle airport UK in 1983 where it has been since.
