2001 March: The Fiat Punto is Fiat's entry in the small car/ hot-hatch category. It competes against the Peugeot 206, Toyota Echo, and Volkswagen Polo.
Fiat reports that one million had been sold between the launch, in 1999, and early 2001.
Europeans can get some quite exotic technology in their small cars - such as a seven speed automatic gearbox used in the Punto Speedgear.
