The ESMAP `Outer Melbourne Directory' is a real bargain for anyone interested in a four wheel drive day trip within an hour and a half of Melbourne. Unfortunately it may take a bit of a search to find a copy as it was produced in 1991 by the Country Fire Authority Mapping Association and Mapping Victoria for emergency services in Victoria and we know of no plans to repeat the effort. Good map shops may still have copies.
The style of the directory is rather like the Melways street directory, and indeed the city area is included, but the interest to four wheel drivers is in its coverage out to Bacchus Marsh in the west, Kilmore in the north, and Matlock and Mount Baw Baw in the east. The eastern region in particular includes many nice 4WD day-trip locations such as the Gembrook - Powelltown - Noojee, and Healesville - Toolangi - Black Spur areas.
The maps are at a scale of 1:50,000 and at about $10 (1997) for 140 pages of them, even if some are of the CBD, it sure beats buying individual sheets.
