Austin Ant
The 1968 Austin Ant
did not make it past the prototype stage.
Another product of the genius of Alec Issigonis,
it is a compact four wheel drive with a transverse front-mounted
engine of 1275cc (sound familiar?) which drives the front wheels,
with selectable drive to the rear, i.e. part-time four wheel drive.
It is a neat little car,
but production costs would have been close to those of the much larger
Land Rover
and the project was stopped as being uneconomic.
