Audi A4 and S4

2000 June: Audi (au)
will bring in 30 RS4.
The Audi RS4 is based on the (hot) S4 version of the A4,
using the 2.7 litre twin turbo V6
(280kW from 6100rpm to 6700rpm, 440Nm from 2500rpm to 6000rpm),
a six-speed manual gearbox, and
Quattro full-time all wheel drive transmission.
This station wagon is said to accelerate from 1-100km/h in 4.9 seconds,
so owners will be able to pop down to the shops very quickly.
Distiguishing features include 18" alloy wheels
with wide low-profile 255/35 ZR 18 tyres.

The driver and front passenger sit in Recaro seats and
are protected by front, side airbags and head airbags.

1999 November: The S4
(right) launched in Australia at
au$113,800 (sedan) and au$116,600 (Avant, wagon).
The cars feature a 2.7 litre twin-turbo V6,
195kW at 5800rpm and 400Nm from 1850-3600rpm.
Audi (au) hopes to sell about 80 S4 sedans and 20 S4 Avant wagons
in 2000.
1999 October: Audi Australia
raised the standard spec's of the A4 while holding prices.
Both 4 and 6-cylinder A4s get leather upholstery and
the 4s get cruise control (as in the 6s).
1999 September:
The Audi RS4 a high performance
version of the Audi S4 Avant (station wagon)
features a 2.7 litre twin-turbo-charged V6 engine (280kW),
6-speed manual gearbox, and
Quattro four wheel drive.
Audi's subsidiary, Quattro GmbH,
creates this kind of faster version of Audi cars.
The RS4 is a left-hand drive car;
a RHD model is still under consideration.
1999 May:
Audi (Australia) launched the updated A4 sedan and Avant (wagon).
Externally there are new "one-piece ellipsoidal headlights
and a revised front grille with fog lamps integrated into
the front air-dam...".
Wipers, mirrors, bumpers, door handles have been changed.
On the safety front, side air-bags protect the heads of front and rear
passengers in side impacts.
The engine now has a "drive by wire" (electronic) throttle
and cruise control is now standard on the V6 models.
The body is said to be more rigid and suspension arms are made of aluminium
reduce unsprung weight.
Prices of "all four-cylinder variants will rise by $400,
while V6 models [will rise by] just $600" ($au 5/'99).

The Audi A4 1.8 litre turbo quattro manual now retails at $61,990 ($au),
the Avant at $64,700.
Power has risen to 132kW (was 110kW) and
torque is 235Nm from 2000rpm to 4600rpm.

1997 Audi A4 Quattro All Wheel Drive

1997's Audi A4 Quattro (above) and the other Audi all wheel drives
are descended from Audi's rally cars of the 1980's.
This one was at the
Melbourne Motor Show.
1995 model A4,
