Aro 4WD

Peter James owned this ARO from 1988 until 1994. It was one of only 8 of the Romanian four-wheel drive imported into Australia for ADR compliance. The project was stopped with the introduction of unleaded fuel into Australia.

The Aro weighed about 1700kg and had only a copy of a Renault-12 motor to haul itself around and so was pretty slow. Although the wheels were small, the supple suspension, leaves at the rear and double wishbones with coils at the front, gave good offroad performance. It was part-time 4WD.

It was pretty reliable; we had to replace the clutch, a speedo cable, radiator and a few minor items in 6 years.
