2012 Acura ZDX Review

The first Acura vehicle to have been released with a six speed automatic transmission, the Acura ZDX is an exceptional luxury crossover.   The number of creature comforts that this vehicle has is simply staggering.  At the same time, it gives nothing up in terms of performance.  Rumor has it that the ZDX was released to be a direct competitor to the BMW X6, and it has certainly done well to compete with it, if not surpass it.  Not only is it more affordable than its German counterpart, it also has numerous unique features that set it apart from any other potential crossover vehicle that make it especially worthy of consideration.  The latest addition, the 2013 Acura ZDX looks absolutely out of this world.  One look at this concept car will show you just how far the automation industry has come.  Scheduled to feature a hybrid drive, the car looks so futuristic that it belongs in a science-fiction movie.

For now though, we’ll just have to make do with the 2012 version of the car.  A breakdown of its features will show that this vehicle was designed to be responsive, and fun to drive.  First on our list today, the engine.  The Acura ZDX features a 3.7 L V-6 engine.  This is Acura’s largest engine in any of its classes, making it capable of putting out 300 hp and up to 270 foot-pounds of torque.  As is usual for Acura, the engine has variable valve timing and electronic control to manage the high rpm horsepower at designated RPMs.  The vehicle is capable of doing 16 miles to the gallon in the city and 23 miles to the gallon on the highway.  An electronic throttle with variable sensitivity is in place to ensure that the car responds differently according to the driving conditions.

Moving on to the car’s handling and drivetrain, the Acura ZDX has been designed to be a performance oriented car through and through.  First off, the ZDX features Acura’s award-winning all-wheel-drive system, along with its six-gear Sportshift automatic paddlers.  The car also comes with an optional integrated dynamic system.  Effectively, what the system allows you to do is to adjust the stickiness of your suspension for either comfort or performance.  If you want a comfortable ride while cruising down the highway, you can just switch it to comfort.  Meanwhile, if you want something more responsive and rigid, simply switching the selection to sport will allow you to handle the vehicle like a sports car.  The car is able to do this because it contains what is known as a magneto-rheostatic fluid.  This fluid changes it stiffness in an applied magnetic field.  By varying this magnetic field, you can change the thickness of the fluid, and thus the stiffness of the suspension.

Where luxury and controls are concerned, the vehicle gives nothing up.  A digital instrument display panel organizes all the information you need in an easy-to-understand manner.  Steering wheel-based controls for audio and multimedia are available by default.  A multi-informational display that is capable of showing different kinds of information is also in place.  Finally, the vehicle offers optional luxury features such as voice recognition and a keyless access system if you opt for them.  As with most Acura vehicles, the Acura ZDX has automatic climate control which you can optionally opt to have linked with your GPS so that you can adjust internal cabin climate settings depending on where it is you are driving.  It also comes with the Acura Bluetooth hands-free link, so you don’t have to worry about having to get an external Bluetooth hands-free set.
