The price of fuel went up and up (crude, US$35+) so it was good timing that the back room developments in fuel cells, hybrid power systems, etc. got one or two steps nearer to production. e.g. Daimler Chrysler have prototype Dodge Durango 4x4s running around with plans for sales ~2003.
The Sbarro 6x6 conversion of the Citroen Berlingo van/ people mover is just weird.
